Below are some questions that many of our patients have asked us about.  If you have a specific question that is not addressed, please call our office at 763.757.1535

Why would I need a crown?

Crowns become necessary when the tooth structure has weakened due to decay or damage and cannot support a filling.   A porcelain crown will cover the tooth completely and can be matched to your other teeth to give you a perfectly natural look.

Why should I use tooth colored fillings?

Amalgam fillings (silver) corrode and leak over time.  This process blackens the tooth and can lead to hairline cracks that can cause pain in your back teeth.  You can replace your silver fillings with natural tooth resins that actually strengthen your remaining tooth structure because of the adhesive agent used to bond the filling to your tooth.  These “composite fillings” will match your natural color and will be more aesthetically pleasing when you smile.

What if I have missing teeth?

Bridges, implants or partial dentures can restore your teeth and even create a more youthful appearance.  Bridgework is a series of connected crowns that replace missing teeth and are attached to the surrounding teeth.  Dental implants are permanently anchored into the jaw itself resulting in the most natural feel and appearance.  Denture technology has greatly improved over the years and older dentures can be replaced to give you the most comfortable and the most natural look possible.

Does it matter if I’m missing a tooth?

YES!  Missing a tooth creates stress for all your remaining teeth.  It affects the way your teeth work together and can result in digestive problems, speech problems and tempro-mandibular joint disorder.   At the least, it will affect your facial structure, giving your cheeks a sunken appearance, and your chewing ability.

What can be done if I have stained or discolored teeth?

Throughout history, people have sought new methods of teeth whitening.  Early Romans added imported urine to their teeth whitening mix (unaware that it was the ammonia molecules that brightened their teeth). In the 14th Century, people used a solution of highly corrosive nitric acid to whiten (and permanently damage…) their teeth.  Fortunately, modern dentistry now offers a variety of teeth whitening options without the harmful side affects.  Many patients can benefit from whitening procedures, some done in the home while others are done during an office visit.  Veneers, bonding, and whitening all produce a brighter, more confident smile.  After reviewing your personal oral health, we can help you make an informed decision.

What do I do if I have a dental emergency?

Does it really matter if a dental office has all the latest high-tech equipment?

High-tech means better diagnosis, more efficient services, and improved outcomes for you.   For instance, intra oral cameras provide images of the tooth that are magnified 35 times giving us enlarged visuals that help to determine diagnostic procedures.  Digital x-rays reduce the radiation to the patient by 75-90% and saves time by reducing developing time from 8 minutes to 2 seconds.  Also, digital x-rays don’t use chemicals in development to they are friendlier to the environment.
